Arrow rests and shelf rest are primarily intended to improve the shooting of the arrow, slide over the shelf with the least possible resistance. For traditional bows mostly arrow pads made of leather or felt are used, which are glued directly onto the shelf (the point on the bow on which the arrow is placed). With more modern bows, mostly takedown bows, supports that keep the arrow completely in the air are used. The arrow rest is usually designed in such a way that the feathers of the arrow have as little contact as possible with the bow and support when passing the arrow rest. In order to achieve this, there are many different designs that work with springs, brushes, lever and magnet mechanisms. The simplest arrow rests cost only approx. CHF 4.- and are made of plastic, while higher-value models can cost well over 100.- CHF.
